Employed and self-employed workers who are unable to work due to a COVID-19 lockout are eligible for the Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit (CWLB). The CWLB is only available if your region is under a COVID-19 lockdown order.
For each 1-week period, if you are eligible for the CWLB, you can receive $300 ($270 after taxes are deducted). You may apply for any weeks between October 24, 2021, and May 7, 2022, that your region is qualified. The Canada Revenue Agency is in charge of administering the CWLB (CRA).
Who is eligible for the Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit (CWLB)?
You can get $300 ($270 after taxes withheld) for each 1-week period if you meet all of the eligibility criteria for the Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit (CWLB).
Only after your region is classified as a COVID-19 lockdown region may you use the CWLB.
Criteria for eligibility
For the 1-week period you’re applying for, you must meet all of the following requirements:
- You are a Canadian citizen.
- In Canada, you were present.
- You must be at least 15 years old to participate.
- You have a valid Social insurance Number (SIN) (SIN)
- You earned at least $5,000 from any of the following sources in 2020, 2021, or the 12 months prior to the date you apply: earnings from a job (total or gross pay)
- net earnings from self-employment (after deducting expenses)
- EI or comparable QPIP benefits for maternity and parental leave
COVID-19 benefits amount from EI regular, special, or fishing benefits:
- Benefits for Canada’s Emergency Response (CERB)
- Benefits for Canada’s Recovery (CRB)
- Benefits for Caregivers in Canada (CRCB)
- Benefits for Recovering from Illness in Canada (CRSB)
- You submitted a tax return for the year 2020.
- A COVID-19 lockdown region is a place where you live, work, or provide a service.
In your region, a COVID-19 shutdown resulted in one of the following:
You lost your job and were unemployed; you were self-employed but unable to continue; you were employed or self-employed but saw a 50% drop in your average weekly income from the previous year; you were employed or self-employed but saw a 50% drop in your average weekly income from the previous year; you were employed or self-employed but saw a 50% drop in your average weekly income from the previous year; you were employed or self-employed but saw a 50%
Unless it was reasonable, you did not do any of the following:
- Resign from your job
- Actively stop working, decline down a reasonable job, refuse to return to work when your employer requests it, and neglect to
- Resume self-employment when it is possible
- You will not be eligible for the CWLB if you were allowed to work from home (telework).
- You either received the COVID-19 immunization or it is not required for you to continue working.
- Due to overseas travel, you were not self-isolating or quarantined.
If you were isolated, this does not apply to you because:

- If you meet all other eligibility conditions and one of these exceptions applies to you, contact the CRA to apply: 1-800-959-8281
- If you receive the benefit beginning in 2022, you must file your 2021 and 2022 tax returns by December 31, 2023.
- If you start receiving the benefit in 2021, you must file your 2021 tax return by December 31, 2022.
You will not be eligible for this benefit if you do not file by the deadline. Any payments you received would have to be returned.
When should you apply for the Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit (CWLB)?
The Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit (CWLB) starts on October 24, 2021 and May 7, 2022.
What are the rules for eligibility periods?
Each eligible period for the Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit (CWLB) is a one-week term. Between October 24, 2021, and May 7, 2022, the CWLB is available for certain regions.
If you meet all of the requirements, you can apply on the Monday following the first week of your region’s COVID-19 lockdown.
Make a separate application for each week.
The CWLB does not automatically renew. Each 1-week period requires a separate application. Every time you apply, the procedure is the same.
You have a certain number of weeks to apply for.
The number of weeks you can apply for each lockout is set by the government. You may apply for all open periods during the scheduled lockdown in your region if you are eligible.
You have up to 60 days following the conclusion of any eligible 1-week period to apply for another one.
If you are eligible, you may apply for the first eight periods until February 16, 2022.
Dates of the beginning and end of the period
Each one-week period begins on Sunday and finishes on Saturday the following week.

How to apply online
- Visit CRA account sign up
- Enter your social insurance number
- Click on “Next” then follow the next instruction
If you already have an account
- Visit CRA sign in
- Enter your user ID which you created or given when you are signing up for CRA
- Enter your password
- Click on the sign-in
Apply once a week to keep your payments coming in.
The CWLB does not automatically renew. If your regional lockdown persists, you will need to reapply for each 1-week period separately.
You can only apply once the 1-week period for which you are applying has concluded. Every time you apply, the procedure is the same.
Check to see whether you’re still qualified.

When can you expect to be paid?
If you qualify for the CWLB, you’ll receive $300 ($270 after taxes are deducted) for each 1-week period you apply for.
Time to process without validation
- Deposits made directly into your bank account
- If you have direct deposit set up with the CRA, it takes roughly 3 to 5 business days.

- In 10 to 12 business days, a postal check should arrive.
With validation, processing time increases.
- If your application requires validation, it could take up to four weeks for it to be processed from the moment your documents are received.

- If the CRA needs to verify your application further, you may be asked to give further information. They won’t be able to execute your payment until the validation procedure is finished.

- To validate your application, they may need you to supply the following information. Any documents you send to the CRA may be checked for legitimacy.
Your application will expire if you do not submit your validation documents to the CRA within 30 days.
If you are or have been a worker,
- Pay stubs from the recent past
- If available online, a letter of employment verification, including pay.
- Employment History
- Name, address, and payroll or benefit deposit on bank statements
- Benefits statement (provincial or federal)
If you are or were a self-employed individual,
- Invoice for services done, which includes the following:
- The name of the individual or corporation for whom the service was performed on the service date
Payment for the service or services given is received (a statement of account or bill of sale showing payment and the remaining balance owed) - Documents demonstrating revenue obtained as a lone entrepreneur, an independent contractor, or a partnership from a “trade or business.”
- Any other documentation that proves you earned $5,000 from a job or self-employment.
- Name, address, and benefit deposit in bank statements
- Benefits statement (provincial or federal)
What you need to know about submitting your validation documents
Online
- Submit your paperwork to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). My Profile
- Login to CRA. My Profile
- Select “Submit papers” from the drop-down menu (in the top right corner)
- Put your case number or reference number here.
- “Submit supporting documentation for COVID-19 assistance payments” should be selected.
- Fill in a brief description of your entry and upload your files.
Fax your documents to them.
Include a cover sheet that includes your full name, Social Security number, case or reference number (if applicable), a daytime phone number, and the number of pages you’re faxing.
“Supporting documentation for COVID-19 support payments,” write on the cover sheet.
Send your paperwork through fax to 1-833-325-0555.
By mail
Send your request to Sudbury Tax Centre, Station A, Post Office Box 20000, Sudbury, ON P3A 5C1.
How much time does it take?
Validation can take up to 4 weeks from the time we receive all of your supporting documents. It could take up to 8 weeks if your situation is more complicated, or if the information you supply is unclear or documents are missing. Once the validation is complete, we will notify you.
What to do if your application is turned down
If your application is denied and you disagree with the decision, you may request that it be reconsidered.
The following items must be included in your request for a second review:
- Reasons for your dissatisfaction with the decision (such as not all of the information was considered, certain facts or details were missing, or misinterpreted).
- Any new papers, information, or correspondence that is pertinent
- The second review will not be conducted by the same CRA official who conducted the first assessment in order to ensure fairness and transparency.
