CalFresh benefits are usually limited by the size of your household. Based on your income and expenses, the CalFresh office in your county determines how much you’ll get.
During the pandemic, however, everyone will benefit to the greatest extent possible based on their household size. You’ll receive your regular benefit deposit on your regular benefit deposit day, followed by a second benefit deposit the following month.
How do CalFresh works?
- You will be contacted by your county for an eligibility interview within a week or two.
- You’ll get an EBT card for groceries in 10 days if you’re approved.
- Most supermarkets and farmers’ markets accept EBT cards.
- Step by step, you will complete a form. It should take about 10 minutes to complete.
- ID, pay stubs, and rent receipts are examples of documents. This can be done during your application or at any time in the next 30 days by returning to their website.
What you need to know before applying for Calfresh- Getcalfresh
Where can I get food?
Locate your local food bank for immediate assistance. You can also call 2-1-1 for childcare, affordable housing or shelter, cash assistance, healthcare, and other services.
Benefit takes how long?
Your case will be approved or denied within 30 days by your county. Some low-income individuals are eligible for expedited services, and their cases should be processed within three days.
Counties are receiving more applications than usual as a result of the pandemic. It’s possible that you’ll hear back a little later than usual. If you haven’t heard from your county in more than two weeks and want to contact them, you can find their phone number here.
How does Calfresh affect my application if I lost my job?
If you’ve just lost your job, you should definitely apply for CalFresh. If your income stopped recently, your county will only count any final payments you received in the last 30 days when determining how much CalFresh you will receive in the first month.
If you still have a source of income, your benefits will be calculated solely on that source of income, not on income that has ceased. If you can, show proof of any money you received in the previous 30 days.
It’s not necessary, but any proof you have that your income has stopped can be helpful. This could be a letter from your employer or a screenshot of an email or text message stating that you are no longer employed. If you are unable to obtain proof, write a letter stating your inability to work. Include the last date you worked on the document, and sign and date it.

These documents are acceptable, but they can help you get a bigger benefit:

How to locate local food bank at Cafoodbanks
Food banks collaborate with their communities to ensure that everyone has access to nutritious food. They gather, store, and distribute fresh produce and pantry essentials.
If you need food right away, call 2-1-1 to speak with someone about services in your area (2-1-1 is a three-digit dialing code, similar to 4-1-1). The lines are available 24 hours a day. 2-1-1 phone assistance is available in most areas, but not all.
All you need to know about Calfresh unemployment benefits
You can receive both CalFresh and unemployment benefits as long as the amount you get from unemployment does not exceed the CalFresh income restrictions. You can apply for CalFresh and we’ll tell you if you’re over the limit. The amount of money you get from unemployment will not be affected if you get CalFresh.
You don’t have to declare it on your CalFresh application if you applied for unemployment but haven’t received any money. We recommend contacting your county CalFresh office to inform them of your income changes if you are currently getting CalFresh and have started receiving unemployment or the amount you receive has changed. They will advise you on what to do next based on your circumstances.
