How to Restart an iPhone
Depending on the model, there are three ways to force restart your iPhone. It’s important to note that not all iPhones with Home buttons can be reset with the Home button!
How to Force Restart iPhone X & Newer, Models
The Home button could only be used to manually reboot older iPhones; newer models do not have one. If you need to restart your iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, or iPhone 13 (also known as an iPhone with Face ID), follow these instructions:
- Quickly press and release the volume up button.
- Quickly press and release the volume down button.
- When the Apple logo appears, press and hold the side button, then release it.
How to Restart an iPhone 8 or iPhone SE for the First Time (2nd Generation)
Despite the fact that the iPhone 8 and iPhone SE are older models with Home buttons, they must be reset in the same way as a newer iPhone.
How to Restart Your iPhone 7 Using a Forced Restart
For a reboot or forced restart, the iPhone 7 has its own set of steps. Do not attempt to reset the iPhone 7 using the Home button, even though it has one:
- Hold the volume down and sleep/wake buttons down at the same time.
- After the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
How to Restart an iPhone 6 or iPhone SE for the First Time (1st Generation)
To restore an iPhone 6 or an iPhone SE from the first generation, follow these steps:
Press the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons at the same time.
When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
How to Restart an iPad
Unlike iPhones, forcing a restart on an iPad is much easier, and there are only two ways to do so. Whether or not you have a Home button affects the method.
Without a Home Button, how do you force an iPad to restart?
A new iPad Pro or iPad Mini, or any iPad without a Home button, can be forced to restart.
- Quickly press and release the volume up button.
- Quickly press and release the volume down button.
- Press and hold the top button until you see the Apple logo, then let go.
How to Use the Home Button to Force Restart an iPad
To force an entry-level iPad or any older iPad with a Home button to restart, do the following:
- Hold down the Home and Top buttons at the same time.
- When you see the Apple logo, release both buttons.
- When your iPhone or iPad freezes or glitches, you can use the force restart feature to help you navigate your device. When the touch element on our devices stops working, it can be difficult to troubleshoot. This method does not delete any of your saved data or items. It merely resets the iPhone or iPad.
