Medibank Travel Insurance – Travel Insurance

Medibank Travel Insurance – Medibank private travel insurance

Private health insurance provider Medibank was established in Australia in 1974. They offer health services in a variety of healthcare and insurance fields, including travel insurance, pet insurance, life insurance, medical screenings, and injury management. Zurich Australian Insurance Limited is the underwriter for Medibank.

Do you have any short lists of potential travel insurance companies? In order to help you find the best policy for your needs, we have thoroughly read the fine print to address all of your concerns about Medibank, their travel insurance plans, any significant exclusions, and which policy add-ons you might require.

Medibank covid travel insurance

While Medibank does offer some coverage for COVID-19, there may be restrictions. Some COVID-19 claims are only applicable if you are traveling to Australia or New Zealand if the Smartraveller advice level is below a “Do Not Travel” warning, and if you are not making a claim in connection with a multi-night cruise.

The policy you select will also affect your coverage, so make sure you read the PDS carefully before making a purchase to ensure that you’re getting coverage that meets your needs.

Benefits associated with COVID-19 may include:

  • Expenses for overseas medical care and hospitals if you are diagnosed with COVID-19
  • Fees for amendments and cancellations (excludes Medical Only plan)
  • Additional costs (for instance, if you must return home due to the diagnosis of a family member or business partner with COVID-19)

Benefits under COVID-19 that may only be used for trips to Australia or New Zealand include:

  • Expenses for alternate lodging in the event that the pre-paid lodging is closed due to an outbreak or the intended roommate is found to have COVID-19
  • If COVID-19 forces the cancellation of your pre-paid holiday activity because of being in quarantine due to close contact with COVID-19
  • Temporary travel delays and missed connections

What other cover can be added to Medibank travel insurance?

  • Additional coverage for personal effects and bags

Paying an additional premium will allow you to increase the cover limit for particular personal items, such as jewelry or cameras. When you request a quote, you must be armed with either recent (less than 24 months old) valuations or receipts.

  • Cruise cover
A cruise travel insurance policy must be added to your existing policy if you are taking a cruise for two or more nights. Any claims relating to any aspect of your voyage on a cruise ship will not be covered if you do not purchase this additional optional coverage. The add-on will not be required if your cruise stays within Australian territorial waters.

The following advantages come with Medibank’s cruise insurance:

  • Aboard medical and dental services
  • Health insurance from ship to shore
  • Confined quarters
  • Untapped port
  • Untaken shore excursions

  • Ski activities

If you plan to hit the slopes, you should consider purchasing snow travel insurance because, without it, you might not be protected against claims arising from snow sports. Snow sports are only covered by Medibank if you are skiing or snowboarding on-piste (i.e., inside the boundaries of the ski field), not taking part in a race, and not doing so in a professional capacity.

  • Motorcycling or using a moped

This is an optional extra that must be included in your policy if you intend to ride a motorcycle or moped as a driver or passenger.
In terms of riding a motorcycle or moped, Medibank may only provide coverage if:

  • Less than 250 cc are available in the engine.
  • The driver’s license is current.
  • You’re clad in a helmet.
  • You are not competing or doing so in a professional capacity.
  • You do not partake in motocross.

However, riding a motorcycle or moped will not be covered by Medibank’s personal liability benefit, so you could be held financially liable if you cause damage to someone else’s car or cause them harm.

How to claim Medibank travel insurance

To submit a claim, go online to Medibank’s website and follow the instructions, or download a claim form from their website. You must have proof of your claims, such as receipts, police reports, or hospital bills. These can be scanned for online upload or mailed to Medibank.
The postal address for Medibank is:

Medibank Travel Insurance Team c/o Travel Insurance Partners Claims

Dept PO Box 168 North Sydney NSW 2060 Australia.

Within 10 working days, Medibank will attempt to let you know if your claim was successful.

What benefits are there in Medibank travel insurance?

If you only want medical insurance while traveling, the Medical Only policy may provide coverage for:

  • International medical costs
  • Dental care costs abroad
  • Additional costs (such as transportation and accommodations in case of a natural disaster)
  • liability for oneself

You can be protected if you choose the International Comprehensive travel insurance policy from:

  • International medical costs
  • Dental care costs abroad
  • Additional costs (such as transportation and accommodations in case of a natural disaster)
  • liability for oneself
  • Fees for amendments and cancellations
  • Unmade connections
  • Personal items and luggage

  • Visa, MasterCard, and travelers’ checks
  • Luggage allowance is delayed

Does Medibank’s travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?

While some pre-existing medical conditions have requirements that must be met in order to qualify for policy benefits, many are automatically covered by Medibank. If you have any pre-existing conditions, you must let them know in order to be covered for them.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, it’s wise to read the PDS to determine whether you’ll be covered if it causes you problems while you’re traveling.

The following are a few instances of the ailments that Medibank automatically covers:

  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Carpal Tunnel syndrome
  • Cataracts
  • Coeliac disease
  • Epilepsy
  • Hip, knee, and shoulder replacements
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Osteoarthritis

Visit a Medibank location, use their website (www.medibank.com.au/travel), or call 132 331 to complete a health assessment and declare any pre-existing conditions you may have.
